Whangarei Scenic Walks
Blessed with a temperate climate that allows verdant growth, Whangarei has a ready supply of scenic walks. In the city, there are parks and gardens for a leisurely stroll, and, further afield, scenic reserves and mountains offer a variety of bushwalks and trails.
Walks Include:
- Whangarei Falls
A picturesque falls and picnic site.
- AH Reed Memorial Kauri Park
A remnant of an original kauri forest up to 500 years old, with viewing platforms, a waterfall and several tracks to choose from.
- Bream Head Scenic Reserve
Featuring native bush and a mix of coastal and harbour views.
- Cafler Park and Rose Gardens
Attractive inner-city gardens with a floral clock, waterfall and children's playground.
- Coronation Scenic Reserve
A range of walking tracks, one of which passes through the remains of a Maori pa (fortified village).
- Mangrove Boardwalk
A walkway through the unique mangrove environment of the Hatea River.
- Mount Manaia
An hour-long walk up the mountain providing coastal views over Whangarei Heads, a nearby beauty spot.
- Mount Parahaki
Whangarei's highest point and the site of a former Maori pa (fortified village) believed to be the biggest in New Zealand. There is a pa interpretation on site.
- Raumanga Falls
A short bushwalk, with a waterhole and swimming holes en route.
