Bed and Breakfast Categories
There is a wide range of bed and breakfast accommodations across New Zealand, catering for all levels of expectation and tariffs. Below we have summarised the major types that you will find around the country, and listed on the Jasons website:
- Bed and Breakfasts
Accommodation in private homes with the owners, where guests usually have a separate lounge and bathrooms. Often 2-4 guest rooms.
- Bed and Breakfast Hotels
Larger hosted properties with some hotel features.
- Bed and Breakfast Inns
Generally larger properties (4+ guest rooms) with more guests, rooms with ensuite bathrooms, more features and facilities, and also offering personal hospitality.
- Boutique Accommodation, Hotels and Lodges
These properties are found in many sizes and offer a little extra in decor, panache, style or ambience.
- Lodges
Generally luxury accommodation with superb facilities, a bar available, and full dining facilities in a beautiful natural setting.
- Homestays and Farmstays
Accommodation in private homes or farms, where you share the home with the owners and enjoy all the features of their home. Often 1 or 2 guest rooms.
- Country Homes
Accommodation in private country homes, generally with enuite bathrooms and other features or facilities plus personal hospitality. A chance to enjoy rural life.
- Historic Homes
Elegant, graceful and charming with a significant history and/or architecture. Includes many properties in the above categories.
- Self-contained cottages, Standalone cottages, Studios and Apartments
The cottages may be on farms or in the grounds of the bed and breakfast property. The city equivalent is a self-contained apartment or standalone cottage. Breakfast can be provided or you can be fully self-contained.
A number of farmstay and homestay properties belong to the @home New Zealand association. One of the roles of this association is to establish and maintain the highest standard of service through its members. As part of this, the association carries out 2 yearly assessments of the @home members’ properties.
Other hosted properties may have been assessed by Qualmark who assess all types of accommodation and activity operators throughout New Zealand. Qualmark rated properties normally carry the star ratings in their marketing material.
