Lyttelton Travel Guide

Lyttelton accommodation, Lyttelton activities and attractions, Lyttelton maps, transportation to and around Lyttelton - the ALL NEW Jasons Lyttelton Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Lyttelton.

Surrounded by the rugged Port Hills and overlooking beautiful Lyttelton Harbour, the vibrant port town of Lyttelton has historic architecture and stunning views. Just a quick drive from Christchurch through one of the country's longest road tunnels, Lyttelton has plenty of activities to tempt visitors, from wildlife cruises to heritage trails. Out in the harbour, you can take a guided tour of Ripapa and Quail Islands, spot the rare hector's dolphins on a nature cruise, or join a kayaking adventure. Back on land, you'll find colourful cafes, a Harbour Heritage Trail and a wonderful collection of historic buildings on the steep streets leading up from the harbour. See the remains of the old Lyttelton Goal, step back inside time at Timeball Station, or head to Governor's Bay to see the old church and stroll through the gardens.

Lyttelton has a fascintating geological history. It was formed by the violent eruptions of two Banks Peninsula volcanoes, whose sea-filled craters now form the harbours of Lyttelton and neighbouring Akaroa. You can catch the Christchurch Gondola up Mount Cavendish for magnificent views over the two harbours, or follow in the footsteps of the early Canterbury settlers and climb the Bridal Path up to the crater rim.
