Bushwalking in Norfolk Island

About a third of Norfolk Island is national park or reserve land, offering walking trails and mountain biking routes through the island’s rainforest. En route, visitors may get a glimpse of the rare Norfolk Island Green Parrot or hear the Norfolk Island Morepork (boobook owl), thought to be the world's rarest bird.

Walking trails lead to the top of Mount Bates, the highest point on the island at 319m, and to the summit of Mount Pitt, with its superb views out to the Nepean and Phillip Islands.

Norfolk Island National Park has nine sign-posted walking tracks that take in a range of different scenery. The tracks are rated gentle to moderate and take between 20 and 90 minutes (the longest is 3.8km).

Gardeners will find interesting walks at the Botanic Garden, near the intersection of Mount Pitt and Mission Roads, while smaller reserves dotted around the coastline offers dramatic coastal views.
