Norfolk Island Jazz in the Pines 7 - 11 December 2009

Jazz it Up in Norfolk © Christina McRitchie

If non-stop dancing, great entertainment, good company and a fabulous atmosphere appeals to you, then the Norfolk Island Jazz in the Pines Festival is the place to be this December!

Jazz lovers and holidaymakers can look forward to a week of finger-snapping, toe-tapping entertainment combined with fun activities when this tiny slice of Pacific paradise celebrates its eighth annual Jazz in the Pines Festival from 7-11 December.

Set amid Norfolk Island's spectacular sub-tropical scenery, this feel-good week of swing, funk and blues promises to be a highlight for both jazz fans and visitors. This year, Norfolk's whispering pines will echo to the bluesy tones of Australian icon and jazz legend Don Burrows, who will charm jazz fans with his signature mix of classic swing, Latin tunes and modern jazz. Melbourne group the Syncopators will show off the style that won them this year's classic jazz award at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Former Norfolk Islander Rick Robertson and the Eon Beats return with sassy vocalist Evelyn Duprai, and the Kevin Hunt Trio and crooner Johnny Nicol round out the bill.  An added bonus will see a 'Stop, Look and Listen' exhibition of photographs by the multi-talented Burrows, taken over a lifetime of travel and jazz playing.

Jazz fans have been coming to Norfolk for the past seven years to enjoy this world-class music festival, and the island's heritage Georgian architecture and towering pines provide a unique setting. This year, three events, including a matinee beach concert, will be held in the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area. This protected area was the site of Norfolk's former convict settlements and has one of the finest collections of colonial Georgian buildings in Australia.

While you're visiting, make sure you take time enjoy the island's many other activities and attractions. You can dive and snorkelshop for low tax bargains, tour a coffee plantation, sample the island's delicious fruit liqueurs, and uncover Norfolk's colourful history at Norfolk Island Museum and the Cyclorama.

So, why not combine the fun of jazz and the wonders of Norfolk for that perfect holiday experience!
