This diverse region, with its vast rivers, coral reefs and World War II relics, incorporates East Sepik, Sandaun, Madang and Morobe provinces. The mighty Sepik River – one of the world’s great waterways – runs through East Sepik Province, and there is excellent diving off the coastal areas of Madang and Morobe. Sandaun province, which shares a border with Indonesia, remains relatively undeveloped, with lovely beaches and picturesque villages.
