A region of stark contrasts, this vast area incorporates the Western, Gulf, Central, Oro and Milne Bay Provinces. The capital of Port Morseby is located on the southern coast of the mountainous Central Province, an area known as the National Capital District. The Southern Region’s most famous highlight for walkers is the Kokoda Trail, an early goldmining track which links Papua New Guinea’s southern and northern coasts. Other highlights include Varirata National Park.
