Daru, the provincial centre of the Western Province, shares a main border with Irian Jaya in Indonesia. The province has some good birdwatching areas, in particular around Tabubil region, where there are 16 different birds of paradise to be found. Bensbach, a vast flood plain close the Indonesian border, also boasts prolific birdlife and wildlife.

- Balimo
Inland from the capital Daru, this missionary town on the Aramia River has a cultural centre and nearby villages specialise in carvings typical of the region.
- Tabubil
Built to service the Ok Tedi mine, Tabubil sits in a wide forested valley and has all services to cater for the large ex-pat population. You can play golf (nine holes), go running with the Hash House Harriers, or rent a vehicle and explore the Lukwi caves 18km along the Okma Road.
- Bensbach
This vast floodplain teems with wildlife and birds, and is a popular spot for photographers and birdwatchers.
- Fishing
The Bensbach River is a haven for keen fishers, and renowned for its catches of big barrumundi and black bass.
- Birdwatching
There are good birdwatching sites around Tabubil and Kiunga, which are known for their colourful birds of paradise.
