  • Papase’ea Sliding Rocks
Join the locals for a swim at this jungle waterfall just 6km from Apia (you'll need to take a bus or a taxi). There is a 5m rock slide down a waterfall into a deep freshwater pool. An entry fee is required.
  • Vailima Brewery
You can phone (685) 20 200 to arrange a tour and tasting of Samoa Breweries’ award-winning national beer, Vailima.
  • Robert Louis Stevenson Museum
Located on the Cross Island Road, 5km south of Apia, the author's beautifully restored mansion features many of his belongings and travel mementos. There are lovely gardens and rainforest trails surrounding the house. Pack a picnic and take the half-hour walk to the author’s tomb at the top of Mount Vaea for splendid views over Apia.
  • Surfing
The best spots for surfing are from Apia east to Cape Utumauu, and on the south coast from Matautu to Matatufu. Upolu has several dedicated surf resorts including Salani Surf Resort on the South Coast Road.
  • Diving
Upolu’s waters boast over 200 types of coral, along with swim throughs and tunnels, and a huge variety of tropical marinelife including rays, butterfly fish, angel fish, spade fish, giant clams, morays, turtles and reef sharks. AquaSamoa Watersports operates out of Aggie Greys Lagoon Beach Resort and Spa at Mulifanua in the northwest, and Moanalei Dive N Surf is based at Lalomanu Beach in the east.
  • Lalomanu Crater Walk
Behind the hospital at Lalomanu in the eastern Aleipata district is the start of the short walk to a long-extinct volcanic crater. The crater is home to a big population of flying foxes. Ask for a guide at Lalomanu village.
  • Uafato Conservation Area
This wild part of Upolu in the northeast has some of the island's most magnificent scenery and is home to several native bat and bird species, including the rare tooth-billed pigeon.
  • Lake Lanoto’o National Park
South of Apia, in Upolu’s mountainous central plateau, this green crater lake is full of wild goldfish introduced by German settlers. The turn-off to the lake is 2.3km past the Bahai Temple (heading south) on the Cross Island Road. A 4WD trail (3-5hrs return) leads to a track to Lake Lanoto’o. You’ll need good walking shoes, long trousers and water. A guide is recommended.
  • O Le Pupu-Pue National Park & Peapea Cave
Visitors can tackle some great hiking trails in this rugged park, which stretches from the south coast up to the mountainous spine of Upolu’s centre. The Togitogiga Falls are a short walk from the park’s entrance and a trail leads to Peapea Cave - an old lava tube full of native white-rumped swiftlets. You’ll need a torch, plenty of water and a guide.
  • Togitogiga Falls
These cascading falls make an ideal spot for a picnic, with toilets and changing rooms. Check for logs and rocks before jumping into the pools. Entry is free.
  • Sopoaga Falls
On Le Mafa Pass Road, a beautiful garden and picnic site overlook these falls which plunge into a vast gorge. A fee is charged.
