Tongatapu's flat terrain makes it easy to explore beyond Nuku’alofa by bike or car, and there are plenty of rentals in town. You’ll find beautiful beaches, historic sites and peaceful villages, and Tongatapu's famous blowholes near Houma on the southwest coast. Tongatapu, meaning ‘sacred south’, has many reminders of its ancient past. Beyond Nuku’alofa, to the east, the ancient Lapaha area contains most of Tonga’s key archaeological sites. You can visit here to see the network of Langi (terraced tombs) and moats.
Offshore of Nuku’alofa is a maze of motus (islets) and coral
reefs teeming with brilliantly coloured tropical fish. Reef-viewing boats allow you to explore the varied marinelife, and there is excellent snorkelling, fishing and diving. Visitors can also enjoy a trip to one of Nuku'alofa's beautiful offshore islands. These include rugged 'Eua – Tongatapu’s sister island, and the laidback island resorts of Pangaimotu, Fafa and Royal Sunset, which make a lovely day trip.
