Port Vila Accommodation and Travel Information
This laidback capital is the international gateway to Vanuatu, and is beautifully situated around a magnificent natural harbour. Port Vila is the main residential area of Efate, its population comprising a blend of Melanesian, European, Vietnamese and Chinese. Large colonial houses sitting alongside the modern commercial buildings (no skyscrapers here) are a reminder of the relatively recent European role in the country’s history.
The town’s main street, Lini Highway, is where most of the duty-free shops, cafés, restaurants, boutiques, travel agencies and banks can be found. Market days (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 6am to 1.30pm) bring an added vibrancy to Port Vila with colourful rows of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, shells and souvenirs and delicious aromas of coffee, freshly baked pastries and the fragrance of frangipani. In Port Vila harbour, the island resorts of Iririki and Erakor are ideal for snorkelling and swimming.
