Beautiful Espiritu Santo (Holy Spirit) Island is
Vanuatu’s largest island and known for its stunning scenery. Espiritu Santo is full of adventure with WWII relics, mountains, dense forest and a spectacular ocean playground for water lovers. Yet the pace of life on Espiritu Santo is gentle and traditional culture has been very much preserved. Discovered in 1606 by the Spanish Captain Quiros, Espiritu Santo was later visited by de Bougainville and Captain Cook. Espiritu Santo played an important role during WWII, providing the allies with a secure base. Up to 100,000 US soldiers were based in the main town of Luganville in 1942 and left behind many buildings, four airstrips and coral roads which are still in use today.
Sprawling for several kilometres along the waterfront, laidback Luganville is Vanuatu’s second largest town. The main street is lined with shops and eateries including Chinese restaurants, cafes, general stores, banks

and government service buildings. A feature of Luganville is the World War II Quonset huts (made from corrugated iron) scattered around the Main Wharf and near Unity Park. A good place to soak up some local atmosphere is the busy Luganville Market, located on Main Street near the Sarakata Bridge. Villagers come from all over Espiritu Santo to sell their fresh produce at this bustling market and there are colourful handcrafts to tempt bargain hunters.
