Tanna Island is
Vanuatu’s most popular adventure destination, thanks to its most famous attraction, the fiery Mount Yasur. Yasur is considered to be the world's safest and most easily accessible active volcano. Tours will take you up through the eerie black ash plains by taxi truck or 4WD, then it’s just a short 10 minute walk to the crater rim. Night visits are particularly spectacular when fountains of erupting ash and rock glow bright red against the black sky.
Tanna Island is a mixture of savannah, forest and rugged mountains – stretching from the grasslands and scrub of the north-west to the mountains and dense tropical forest of the south-west. Tanna's fertile centre contains thriving market gardens which produce vegetables and fruit, as well as Tanna's main cash crops of kava and coffee. Tanna Island's 20,000 inhabitants have largely retained their original custom and culture (kastom), preferring to turn their back on modern ways.

Traditional ceremonies, circumcision rites and tribal marriages are frequent events and feature the unique Tannese face painting that is often seen in photos of Vanuatu.
