    Located in the south-east, Tanna’s most famous attraction is regarded as the world’s most accessible active volcano. Over the centuries, ash rain from Yasur has built up huge black sand dunes, creating a stark moonscape. Visitors can climb up to the crater rim, where they are treated to a magnificent fireworks display - night-time viewing is best. You can also post your letters at the world’s first Volcano Post Office (phone 22 000, email philatelic@vanuatupost.vu). Take care when the volcano is more active. Most accommodation venues offer tours.
  • Nekowiar Ceremony
    This ceremony is one of Vanuatu’s most spectacular cultural events, bringing together neighbouring Food Preparation, Tanna © John Nicholls villages for three days of gift-giving ceremonies, kastom dances and feasting. The men’s Toka ceremony is considered the most impressive dance. It is held every three to four years and depends on the completion of a bountiful harvest.
  • Kastom Villages
    A guided tour of one of Tanna’s Kastom Villages is a must see on this amazing island. You will witness a way of life that has not been influenced by Western culture as these villagers continue to embrace a subsistence existence based on their strict belief in ‘Kastom’.  Traditional dancing is performed and the villages have a range of handicrafts on sale for the visitor.
  • South Tanna Cultural Eco Village
    Here the tribes of South Tanna come together to demonstrate the tradition and crafts of their ancestors, including practical applications of plant uses in medicine and lifestyle. You will watch Toka dancing and Tannese Face Painting © John Nichollsdemonstrations and taste the many fruits and vegetables of Tanna.
  • John Frum Villages
    At Sulphur Bay on the East Coast and Imanaka on the West Coast. At a John Frum village, villagers worship a figure claimed to be returning from the US with worldly goods to bestow upon them. The villagers celebrate John’s impending return Friday nights with music and dancing. Visitors welcome.
  • Hiking on White Grass Plains
    These grass-covered plains are home to Tanna’s famous wild horses. The views from the top over the coast to Erromango are breathtaking.
  • Horseriding
    There are a number of excellent choices for horseriding. With Lenakel Cove you can ride high into the forest to visit the largest Banyan tree in the Southern Hemisphere, and with prior booking you can even ride to the volcano. Louniel village, on the east coast, offers riding along Vanuatu’s longest black sand beach.
  • Lemnap Underwater Cave

Sail along the limestone coast to remote villages.  Lemnap Cave is a stunning grotto 60m in diameter with light through a 5m hole in the centre, turning the water a brilliant turquoise colour.  The cave is accessed by a duck dive under the cliff wall, or by swimming through on a lower tide.
  • Snorkelling the Blue Hole
    Situated on the coast at White Grass about 2km north of White Grass airport is a coral hole in the reef face. Spanning approx 100m across and around 2-3m deep, the blue hole has a stunning array of corals and tropical fish to delight the snorkeller.

    On the south-east coast is a deepwater harbour that is a favourite destination for visiting yachts. The harbour was christened by Captain Cook in 1774 and has white sandy beaches and a local café near the beach serving fresh fish and local foods.
