Visitors to Tanna Island will be able to climb Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes. From the crater rim, walkers are treated to a spectacular fireworks display, although care must be taken when the volcano is more active.
Ambrym’s twin volcanoes, Benbow and Marum, are equally magnificent, and considered to be one of the greatest walks in the South Pacific. Tours can be arranged from either Ranon in the north or Lalinda in the south.
On Espiritu Santo, nature lovers will find a range of bush treks through the Vatthe Conservation Area. Renowned for its pristine flora and fauna, this 45sq km reserve stretches from Big Bay to Mount Nimbo (449m), taking in the Jordan River and Vanuatu’s largest lowland forest. The main attractions are birdwatching and forest walks, including a 2-day trek up Mount Wimbo (449m) with superb views over Cumberland Peninsula.
