History

The state of Queensland spent its early days as a penal settlement administered by the British-controlled colony of New South Wales. In 1859, Queen Victoria gave her approval to establish the new colony of Queensland, which became state in 1901. Much of North Queensland and the Outback were opened up by pioneers farming cattle, sheep and sugarcane and by early prospectors searching for gold.
