Nestled in the foothills of the Great Western Tiers, the Georgian village of Longford is one of
Tasmania’s prettiest towns, much admired for its typically English country landscape and well-preserved convict-built architecture. This classified historic town boasts some of the state’s finest bed and breakfast accommodation in historic homes. Longford’s original European settlers arrived in 1807 when a large number of free land-holding farmers were moved to Van Diemen's Land from Norfolk Island. On the outskirts of town are two of Tasmania’s premier estates, Woolmers (1816) and Brickendon (1824). Both have been nominated for World Heritage Listing and are open to the public.
