Apia's Magic Marina

Apia Marina ©Troppo Fishing Adventures For the past couple of years, something’s been happening to the face of Apia, Samoa’s lively capital. Down at the water’s edge, The Samoa Ports Authority (SPA) has been hard at work creating a new pier and a world-class marina designed especially for international yachties.

At the western end of the harbour, you can now find Alia’s - a new fish market and pier for the local fishing boats, and a fantastic improvement to this precinct. Every morning, fishermen from the villages on the north coast of Upolu bring their fish to be sold on the open tables. The many species of colorful, tropical of fish are a great indication of just how rich the waters around Samoa are, and it’s well worth an early morning visit to enjoy the character and bustle of the markets and buy your fish fresh off the boats.

Fishing Trip © Troppo Fishing AdventuresAt the eastern end of the harbour, nestled into the corner next to the commercial wharf area, is Apia’s newest jewel, The Apia Marina. This international standard marina has 60 floating births designed for yachts and motor boats from 20ft upwards. All births have 24hr security, fresh water and electricity.

This marina is purpose-built for the use of international yachties wanting a safe and secure harbour in the tropics as they sail the waters of the mighty Pacific Ocean. If you are looking for a place to lay up and relax for a few days or weeks, the friendly environs of Apia and her new marina are perfect. The marina is only a 5 minute walk from the main commercial district of Apia, with easy access to banks and all the retail shops you need to stock up for the next leg of your journey. In 2008, the next stage of the marina will be completed, adding a marine retail precinct with a chandlery, marine workshop, cafés and a tourist information and booking office for fishing charters and marine activities.

Apia Marina © Troppo Fishing AdventuresIf you are a landlubber looking for excitement and a spot of adventure, the marina is also home to local charter operator Troppo Fishing Adventures and their beautiful fly bridge cruiser Pure Indulgence. Not only does Troppo offer half day and full day Sports Fishing Charters, they also operate Coastal Cruises and Sunset Cruises for groups of up to 12 people. Charters can be fully catered and are a great way to see Apia, the beautiful north coast and the amazing sunsets over the Apolima Strait between the islands of Upolu and Savaii. The company of frolicking dolphins and, in season, the sight of magnificent humpback whales as they migrate along this coast, can be a special bonus. One Dollar Restaurant © Troppo Fishing AdventuresAnd if you're looking for a unique dining experience, be sure to try out The One Dollar Restaurant, which operates out of a converted fishing boat nestled against the foreshore. Whether it be a sumptuous lunch as you look over the waters of the harbour or a romantic dinner as you watch the sun set over Apia, this is a great place to enjoy good company and a delicious meal.

So there you have it. Thanks to the vision of the Samoa Government and the Samoa Ports Authority, the port of Apia is moving on. If you’re an international yachtie or visitor, don't forget to make the new Apia Marina and the friendly people of Apia part of your Polynesian adventure.
